Hard Drives

Hard drive normally last an average of 3 to 5 years depending upon the amount of time the hard drive is used on a daily basis and how many users are sharing that drive. Here are some things you can do to see the warning signs of a hard drive that is about to fail:

• The best thing you can do is perform a daily backup of your data files. If the hard drive dies, at least you have what really counts: your files!
  
  
• Use a utility to scan the disk when no one is using it. Norton software comes with a utility to do this. You can even schedule it to make regular checks of your hard drive automatically during the night. It will check for bad sectors of the hard drive. If you have too many bad sectors, it may be time to transfer your data to a new hard drive.
  
  
• If you can not copy or move files or folders; this is a sign that the hard drive may need to be replaced.
  
  
• If you can not save files; this is a sign that the hard drive may need replaced.
  
  
• Some hard drives will make a certain amount of noise when in use. This is normal, but if it becomes louder or makes noises you never heard before; this is a sign that the hard drive needs replaced.

DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU:

A client of ours had his hard drive crash. He did not implement proper backup procedures. His business was down for 2 weeks during the busy Christmas season while data from his hard drive was recovered. Even then, not all data was salvageable. The cost was enormous.
